Read to Race

One of the perks of living near a NASCAR speedway, is that they have a reading program offered to the local schools.  All the kid has to do is read one book every day for 30 days and they get become official members of the Lefty's Kids Club.  This gives them a membership card and a free adult ticket for either Friday's qualifying or Saturday's NSA 300 race.

Kya's school had 100% participation, which meant her principal was able to go up on stage just before the race and receive a check for $1,000 for their library.  Pretty cool!  He is super tiny in the picture, but he is directly in the middle and it was exciting for Kya to see her principal up there.

We arrived about 45 minute early, in hopes to see the Moto X exhibition, but we missed it by just minutes, as the place is so much larger than any of us realized and it took us forever to find them.  But we were able to walk around and see some cool cars & stuff.  Here is Wayne and the kids in front of the car the speedway uses for classes.

Recently, we had a new neighbor move in and we couldn't be happier to have them in the neighborhood.  Misty is a single mom with two girls the same ages as my two girls.  Because kids 12 and under are free and we had one extra adult ticket, we invited them to come join us for the day.  Such fun getting to spend time with them and getting to know Misty better.

The pace car leading the racers around the track to warm up their tires.  I was amazed at just how BIG the speedway is.  The track is 2 miles, the RV campers are in the middle along with the pits and other buildings.  From our seats, we could see turns 1, 2 and 4, but could not see them going into turn 3 or the back straight-a-way.

We didn't stay for the entire race, because it was so loud our ears were hurting.  I did buy ear plugs, but gave the 2 extra pairs we had to our neighbor girls, so us adults just had to deal with it.  We also left early because the kids started to get antsy (a kid can only sit for so long watching cars go round & round) and we wanted to beat the crowd and head over to Marie Calendars where we were able to have all the kids eat for free thanks to them doing so well in school. (They received an award which gave them a free dinner & pie).  I am so proud of all the hard work my kids put into their studies and having them earn these free tickets & meals allows us to experience things we wouldn't normally be able to do as a family.
